Objective

Students will work with each other to complete a note taking guide on the branches of the government.

Description of lesson

1.  Group the students into triads. Inform each triad that they are to complete a study sheet on the branches of the government.  Have each person in the triad choose a branch of the government to be rsponsible for taking notes on.

2.  Have the executive branch video clip downloaded to one computer in the lab.  Allow all those students assigned to this branch to gather around the computer so they can watch it.  (Notetaking may be easier on the students if they have clip boards or books to press on.)  Begin the video clip and let the students watch it.  After the video is completed, provide the students time to discuss the main ideas of the video.  Do the same with each of the other video clips.

3.. Have the students return to their triads.  They are to "teach" the other members in their triads about their branch.  Each student is responsible for completing their study guide.

4.  Show the branches of the governemnt notebook document on the smart board and discuss.  Encourage class participation in the discussion.

Enrichment:

Our government has three main groups that help make and enforce laws. They balance each other so that one group can never become more powerful than the others.

Research the site, Ben's Guide to the Government.  Then using Inspiration, make a web showing the three branches of government. Include the following facts:

What is the Executive Branch of government?

What are the people in this group called?

How do these people become part of this group?

What does this Branch do?

What is the Legislative Branch of government?

What are the two parts of this group?

How do these people become part of this group?

What does this Branch do?

What is the Judicial Branch of government?

What are the people in this group called?

How do these people become part of this group?

What does this Branch do?
